WISeKey is working since 2005 in partnership with Microsoft Corp to deploy its Identity Semantics Suite with Microsoft’s Citizen Services Platform (CSP). The combination enables public services across borders and across legally accepted identity infrastructures operated by diverse public and private entities. This makes it easy for local, regional and national governments to deal with the complexity of identity systems and identity credentials that they are or will be required to accept as part of, for example, the European Services Directive (requiring a one-stop-shop treatment for businesses through electronic means). Governments at all levels are increasingly asked to respond to demands for improved service and efficiency. Boost your cyber defences

In order to protect themselves from the latest cyber security threats, businesses must be sure that they are investing in the right security solutions, says Tim Bloechl

The Microsoft software we all depend on is useless if it doesn’t work due to hacking or other cyber threats. Almost every day in the press we learn of government computer network outages, leaked databases, private or sensitive information disclosures, compromised security systems, or other perils on the internet. The threat looms large and is growing. Last year Norton estimated the global cost due to cyber crime was US$388 billion. I suspect the cost is much higher as we don’t know what is not reported or unknown in the quiet and stealthy world of cyber theft. The cyber defensive struggle continues and we must protect ourselves, our organisations and the systems we depend on to operate lest we become the next victim.

In my judgment, Microsoft has perhaps the best understanding of this cyber threat and what to do to defend against it more than any company in the world. It monitors the ebb and flow of the internet, identifying new threats and implementing counter measures. WISeKey moves into digital job creation – Forging a new path in China

Early in the morning at a café in a conference centre in Dalian, China in September, Carlos Moreira sipped his coffee and reflected on the challenges facing his company and its interdependent, interconnected and deeply recession-battered world.

The CEO of WISeKey, the Swiss maker of high-versatile digital identity encryption systems, had recently seen his company named a New Champion by the World Economic Forum, a nomination which told the Forum’s audience of established corporate, academic, news media, and political leaders that WISeKey was one of the world’s most innovative and promising new companies.

Security on a more personal level

The World Economic Forum’s faith was grand but well-placed. WISeKey is the hottest Swiss digital technology company in years. Founded in Geneva in 1999, WISeKey’s first major collaboration was with international non-government organizations, the International Organization for Security in Electronic Transactions (OISTE) foundation and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The partnership yielded international standards on cyber security and electronic commerce solutions that were widely embraced by governments and leading corporations around the world.

WISeKey made its PKI, which stands for “Public Root Key”, the heart of digital identity systems, devices and services designed to protect creators and consumers alike from the rogues of the digital age: hackers, spies, counterfeiters, trespassers and thieves. Whereas giant digital security corporations, like Symantec and McAfee, protected your computer mainly from a constant onslaught of faraway viruses, WISeKey’s services operated on a more personal scale.

Lastly, large-scale telecommunications projects – airports, office buildings mobile networks, etc – have become far more efficient, “green” and ready for international business when embedded with WISeKey’s full suite of digital ID programs.

Living up to a straightforward vow WISeKey’s mission statement is a straightforward vow “to facilitate and enable the mass use of secure digital identities in everyday life”. It hasn’t always been easy, but the company lives up to it.

With a corporate culture powered by the Swiss tradition of discretion and neutrality, WISeKey gained the trust of the world’s great corporations early on. It partnered with Microsoft, Rolex, and HP. Those collaborations helped those companies become greener bureaucracies, more secure product developers and better supporters of small businesses’ clients needs for secure and efficient electronic transactions. WISeKey soon moved from being a promoter of digital certifications and secure e-transaction systems to being an implementer and service provider in this fast growing field.

According to market research by Gartner, the security software market increased 19% per year in recent years. WISeKey rode that market to the

Governments, both federal and municipal, regularly hired WISeKey to help increase the safety and effectiveness of their internet services. Corporations in industries as varied as retail and high-speed sailboats praised WISeKey’s customized and original digital transaction systems for helping them stay a step ahead of counterfeiters of their products and data thieves.

Furthermore, WISeKey stayed true to its public service spirit and continued to collaborate with a few non-profit organizations. At the 2009 Clinton Global Initiative, Moreira announced plans for WISeKey to create digital identity solutions for mobile phones to help the world’s immigrants, both legal and illegal. Few companies can pull off these projects, for they require that WISeKey be skilled and trusted enough to play the role of honest broker, coordinator and service provider to a country’s often competing key stakeholders: government ministers, business operators, the news media, corruption watchdog groups and, last but far from least, consumers.

“WISeKey is becoming a bit like Google,” Moreira says. “Our digital identity encryption systems are becoming platforms people and organizations customize and use to manage their lives. They often do it in creative ways we hadn’t even imagined. I find that rewarding. It feels good to empower people to shape their own fortunes.”

All in all, WISeKey kept a very busy slate. The small firm was contributing digital identity solutions to the world’s greatest challenges, from sustainable development to security in electronic transactions to immigration. In 2010, WISeKey would consider a public offering of shares in the company, so its management could invest and move quickly into mass market digital identity protection for electronic transactions. It would sell digital ID products directly to consumers.

According to Scot Wingo, chief executive of ChannelAdvisor, an eBay¬backed company that helps stores like Wal-Mart and J.C. Penney sell online, e-commerce was set to grow to 15% of overall retail in the next decade from around 7%. Since e-security concerns would grow along with e-lifestyles, WISeKey’s business would flourish. Moreira thought he had all the bases covered.

A fateful meeting for a new path

Then Moreira met Peter Liu. A mutual friend introduced them to each other in the conference centre in Dalian. Liu was chairman of the WI Harper Group, one of the world’s most successful venture capital firms. With offices in Beijing, Taipei and San Francisco, and special insights on the Chinese technology markets, WI Harper Group was big time. Founded in 1996, WI Harper’s portfolio included companies like Sirf, a San Jose, California-based provider of GPS chipsets and Shanghai-based Medical System, a clinical information system provider.

Moreira and Liu hit it off. A 15¬minute chat stretched to three hours. Shared passion for international development and smart digital business eventually led the two men to discover a new path for WISeKey’s business: job creation.

It wouldn’t be easy. The job of creating jobs anywhere in the world seemed practically impossible during the recession. This fall, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a Paris-based think tank that does intense research on the challenges of 30 member countries (which happen to be most of the world’s most-developed countries), reported that unemployment would remain terrible in 2010. It would rise to nearly 10% by the end of 2010, from 5.6% in 2007, and above its previous post-1979 peak of 7.5% in 1993.

The OECD report said that government spending programmes on the labour market – retraining programmes, for example – could be better focused. While programmes to put workers on reduced hours have sustained the incomes of many jobless people, coverage of such benefits is weak in some OECD countries.

Peter Liu and Carlos Moreira decided on the spot that investing their considerable resources and talents in a digital identity technology hub in China would be good business and good for a large society with a highly mobile labour force. WISeKey and WI Harper signed a letter of intent to collaborate on developing business opportunities for WISeKey in China.

The agreement is aimed at creating convergence in the electronic identity ecosystem in China by offering WISeKey’s expertise in value-added services and products to the growing user community of digital identification for electronic identity cards, electronic tokens, biometric devices, mobile operators and SIM identification. In short, they will facilitate the growing demand for digital authentication products, and the two companies will open physical centres to employ locals and distribute WISeKey’s entire suite of digital ID encryption services to telecommunications and e-commerce companies and ministries.

Needless to say, both men were excited about their epiphany. “WISeKey is very excited about the prospect of helping China deploy digital ID security technologies and solutions on a large scale,” Moreira said. “We will draw heavily on WISeKey’s experience in working with small and large businesses, consumers and regulators to help make our partnership with WI Harper a great success.”

Peter Liu, chairman of WI Harper, said WISeKey’s leadership role in the growing digital security market, knowledge of all stakeholder concerns and ability to navigate the politics of a strong but still developing economic context were the key attractions. “We are very happy to work with a New Champion of the World Economic Forum in helping their technology to be deployed in China,” Liu said. “We believe WISeKey’s experience in the area of digital security will have a significant impact in China when it is combined with the local manufacturing and electronics industry.”

Carlos Moreira is nothing if not prescient. Back in 1999, theWISeKey founder and chief executive officer saw that the Internet was hip. It was snappy. It was game-changing. Obviously, it was user-friendly. But there was one big downside: the Web’s security infrastructure was porous and ill-equipped for stable, secure transactions. “We knew one day this would be a real problem,” Moreira recalls. “The question was, while maintaining a cool, open infrastructure, how could we start developing reliable security solutions?”

WISeKey Closes $35 Million Second Round of the Company's Three- Tranche $110 Million pre-IPO Funding

The $35 million second-tranche includes $12 million raised over 15 months from new and current qualified investors. The third and final- tranche will start December 2011, with 12 million shares at an intended price of $6.00 per share. The Company value of $360 million increased from its $200 million valuation set during the April 2010 first-tranche fundraising round.

"Ha llegado un momento en que Google sabe demasiado de nosotros"

Lo primero que sorprende de Carlos Moreira al oírle hablar es su acento profundamente suizo bañando un español fluido y casi perfecto. Moreira nació en la Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz) pero de joven se fue a Suiza a estudiar hostelería. Sin embargo le pudo más la diplomacia (en Naciones Unidas) y la tecnología, por este orden. Tras su paso por la ONU, y también a raíz de él, Moreira ideó Wisekey, un proyecto que comenzó siendo una alternativa para que los gobiernos tuvieran páginas web seguras, y que ahora le ha hecho socio preferente de Microsoft en el apartado de confidencialidad de los usuarios del sistema operativo Windows Vista.

¿Qué es exactamente Wisekey?

Wisekey es una empresa que hoy en día garantiza la confidencialidad de la identidad digital del usuario a través de un sistema que le permite manejarse por Internet con sus credenciales debidamente encriptadas por él mismo.

Por otro lado, Wisekey también proporciona seguridad al internauta mediante la creación de un entorno protegido en el que pueda moverse, votar a sus representantes ante las instituciones o pagar sus impuestos con total tranquilidad. Este entorno generalmente se comprende como el de las administraciones y servicios del estado al que pertenece el usuario, pero no tiene por qué ser así.

De hecho, en los países más dinámicos, los usuarios quieren trascender a los entornos estatales, lo que nosotros llamamos la raíz, y participar en otros entornos internacionales, lo cual está muy en la lógica de Internet. Wisekey les permite hacerlo mediante la federación de identidades internacionales.

¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear la empresa?

Wisekey comenzó siendo una cosa un poco distinta de lo que hoy día es. Hacia 1999 yo era el director del Área de Comercio Electrónico de la ONU y residía en Ginebra desde hacía años. Allí estaba en permanente contracto con los científicos del CERN, Tim Berners-Lee y Robert Caillau, que habían creado el protocolo Word Wide Web (www), que había abierto la Red a los usuarios.

Por aquel entonces los gobiernos comenzaban a meterse en Internet, pero con muchas cautelas en materia de seguridad. Las empresas de seguridad eran todas americanas, el ICANN, el órgano que regula Internet es americano... Así que desde la ONU se comenzó a pensar en crear un sistema de seguridad para los gobiernos que no crease tanta dependencia de los Estados Unidos.

Fue así como ideamos Wisekey, como una empresa que ofreciera una alternativa que garantizase neutralidad entre los gobiernos en tema de seguridad. Nadie quiere que la llave de su casa la tenga el vecino, ¿no? Pronto comenzamos a trabajar con numerosos gobiernos para crear lo que nosotros llamamos la 'raíz' propia de seguridad de un sistema, que es el entorno seguro del que le hablaba antes, en el que cada estado tiene las llaves de acceso a sus archivos confidenciales.

¿Distingue usted entre seguridad y confidencialidad? ¿Cómo definiría cada una?

"Antes que europeo o español o andaluz soy Carlos Moreira, un individuo que trasciende fronteras, por lo que no quiero que un gobierno tenga las llaves de mi identidad digital"

Precisamente yo distingo ambos aspectos. Para nosotros la seguridad es el entorno, la garantía de que la estructura administrativa en la que te mueves es segura y puede defenderse de ataques externos. Eso es lo que correspondería a la raíz de seguridad de cada estado.

Pero antes que europeo o español o andaluz soy Carlos Moreira, un individuo que trasciende fronteras, por lo que no quiero que un gobierno tenga las llaves de mi identidad digital. Eso es algo personal e intransferible de cada persona, algo que no es equivalente a un pasaporte que dice: "tú has nacido en...".

La identidad digital equivale más bien a la partida de nacimiento, a un papel que dice que, efectivamente, "has nacido". A partir de ahí, el resto de datos son asunto tuyo, y de eso puede encargarse perfectamente Wisekey también. Eso es lo que entendemos por confidencialidad, el que puedas encriptar personalmente tu identidad frente a cualquier intromisión.

"Le estamos dando una neutralidad que Internet no tenía hasta ahora a través de Wisekey" , ha declarado recientemente usted. ¿Han pasado de trabajar por la confidencialidad de grandes entidades y estados a democratizar las posibilidades de proteger la identidad digital de cada individuo? ¿Es decir, que cada usuario pueda controlar sus datos en Internet de modo eficaz, personal y sin la intervención de terceros (administraciones, entidades certificadoras, etc)?

"Regulamos situaciones donde podría producirse un abuso por parte de una entidad superior sobre el usuario"

Efectivamente, como te decía, para nosotros la seguridad es un nivel de entorno, pero la confidencial es una calidad del individuo, es su intimidad digital; sus datos y la seguridad de que puede moverse por la Red con ellos sin el miedo de que el rastro que deja sirva a terceros para poder manipular ya no solamente sus cuentas bancarias, sino sus gustos o el tipo de publicidad que quiere recibir en su correo electrónico.

Es decir, que regulamos situaciones donde podría producirse un abuso por parte de una entidad superior sobre el usuario; ya digo que no necesariamente tiene que ser un uso fraudulento de la identidad digital del individuo, pero sí que éste pueda evitar que de tanto acudir a determinado servicio, éste acabe sabiendo todo sobre él, o que su gobierno acumule datos sobre él que no tiene por qué saber.

Microsoft diseñó una herramienta de encriptación y centralización de datos del usuario, Passport, que resultó un fracaso no por ineficacia, sino porque finalmente los datos encriptados de los usuarios obraban en poder de la empresa. ¿Era realmente arriesgado que una sola empresa centralizase la gestión de los datos de todos sus usuarios?

Claro que era arriesgado, pero es que además era sospechoso, y lo digo siendo hoy en día el socio preferente de Microsoft en los temas de identidad digital. Pero lo cortés no quita lo valiente, y no era coherente ni bueno que Microsoft poseyera los datos de todos sus usuarios.

Finalmente Passport fue abandonado como proyecto por la presión de los usuarios y ahora los servicios de la empresa funcionan con Wisekey, un sistema descentralizado donde los datos personales son gestionados y conocidos sólo por el propio usuario.

En contraposición, en mi opinión existe un nuevo peligro de concentración de datos de los usuarios en una sola empresa, y me refiero en concreto a Google. Ha llegado un momento en que Google sabe demasiado de nosotros.

"Si buscas en Google, la empresa sabe lo que has buscado. ¿Es seguro? ¿Hasta qué punto puede Google puede garantizar la seguridad de tantos datos?"

Si tienes Gmail, almacenas hasta tres Gigabytes de información personal en los servidores de Google (fotos, archivos, conversaciones, etc); si usas Google Docs pones tus documentos en manos de Google. Si buscas en Google, la empresa sabe lo que has buscado. ¿Es seguro? ¿Hasta qué punto puede Google puede garantizar la seguridad de tantos datos?

Esa es la nueva polémica del momento en cuanto a confidencialidad, y las primeras quejas no han venido de las instituciones o los estados, sino de los individuos que se han dado cuenta de todo el material que Google acumulaba. Por eso recientemente la empresa ha tenido que hacer algunas concesión, como la de limitar el tiempo que conservará los datos del usuario.

¿Es similar Wisekey a otros sistemas de gestión de identidades descentralizados como OpenId?

Es similar y alternativo. OpenId es ahora la herramienta que promociona un fuerte lobby en Estados Unidos detrás del cual están empresas como Sun Microsystems y otras.

¿En qué se distingue Wisekey de los certificados digitales emitidos por entidades homologadas por los estados, o del e-DNI? ¿Aspiran ustedes a sustituirlos?

Aspiramos a colaborar con los estados y a ampliar las posibilidades de actuación de los documentos que me mencionas, pero no a sustituir a los e-DNI o a las certificaciones digitales. En algunos países podemos generar certificados digitales de cara a que el individuo pueda operar con la administración, y en otros generamos identidades digitales que tienen un rango de posibilidades más amplio.

Queremos crear identidades digitales que permitan actuar no sólo en un determinado país o administración, sino que tengan ámbito internacional y sirvan para algo más que para hacer gestiones administrativas.

Queremos hacer identidades soberanas, por decirlo de algún modo, que permitan al usuario manejar sus cuentas bancarias desde su navegador, por ejemplo, sin tener que pasar por la página de su banco, donde le cobran comisiones cada vez que hace una transferencia o envía dinero al extranjero.

¿Qué piensa del e-DNI? ¿Se contrapone como documento oficial homolgado por un estado a los posibles certificados personales que pueda general Wisekey?

Creo que el e-DNI es un documento que aunque válido, está limitado en sus posibilidades. Nosotros hemos creado ahora la Wisekey Card, que es el equivalente físico a la identidad digital, y permite al individuo no sólo operar con las administraciones, sino también hacer negocios, pagar en las tiendas, guardar las claves de la puerta de su casa o el código de seguridad de su coche entre otras muchas cosas. Nosotros entendemos que el futuro pasa por aquí, y creemos que nuestro concepto de la identidad digital cambiará muchas cosas.

¿Puede llegar a tener Wisekey problemas de homologación con determinados gobiernos porque choque con sus intenciones de gestionar la confidencialidad administrativa de sus ciudadanos, de controlar actividades delictivas o bien porque el programa permita ciertas actividades de disidencia en países no democráticos?

Puede llegar a tenerlos en los países no democráticos clásicos, como Corea del Norte u otros. Pero acabamos de llegar a un acuerdo con el gobierno de Vietnam y trabajamos también en China. Es cierto que en estos países nos limitamos a crear, de momento, una raíz de seguridad y no ofrecemos a los usuarios el servicio de la identidad digital, pero tenemos que respetar las normas de cada estado.

Pero hoy mismo venía en los periódicos estadounidenses una propuesta del Pentágono para controlar el espacio digital del mismo modo en que se controla el espacio aéreo. Estoy seguro que tal propuesta no prosperará, pero te muestra que en todas partes cuecen habas.

Wisekey es el sistema de encriptado de datos que ha adoptado Microsoft tanto para su sistema operativo Windows Vista como para su software para servidores a partir de 2008. ¿Cómo surgió la relación con Microsoft? ¿Les ha lanzado a ustedes como la empresa de encriptación más potente actualmente?

El acuerdo nos ha lanzado a la primera división en cuanto a seguridad y encriptación, sin duda; ya nos codeamos con las grandes compañías estadounidenses del sector, puesto que somos el socio preferente de Microsoft para estos temas.

La relación surgió en un congreso sobre seguridad al que acudió Steve Ballmer, el presidente de Microsoft. Él ya tenía muy buena opinión de nosotros porque en 2003 hicimos el sistema de confidencialidad digital para las elecciones suizas y funcionó muy bien.

Ballmer nos alabó en pleno congreso, por lo que me acerqué a él y le ofrecí nuestros servicios. Él me dijo que si hacíamos otra prueba como la de suiza y salía tan bien, haríamos buenos acuerdos. Poco después organizamos la confidencialidad de las votaciones de la corte penal de la Haya y las cosas fueron bien. Así que Ballmer cumplió su palabra.

Virtually all luxury firms now face the growing pressure of counterfeiting, which has found an ideal medium in the internet. For a long time, however, these firms preferred to cast a veil over the subject rather than expose brand image to the negative impact of fakes. "Just a few years ago, counterfeiting wasn't seen as a risk," Gian Giacomo Ferraris, Chief Executive, Gianni Versace, observed. "We'd tell ourselves the people who bought fakes weren't our customers anyway. Yet it soon became clear that brands and brand DNA were in danger of being corrupted by counterfeiting." "Counterfeiters are stealing our identity," Nathalie Moullé-Berteaux, Executive VP, Public & Legal Affairs at Lacoste, declared. "They are hijacking investments in innovation and creativity." "And ultimately intrude in relations between the brand and its customer," confirmed Theodore Max, partner at Sheppard Mullin, an intellectual property practice group.

The damage caused by fakes has increased over recent years as counterfeiters have acquired the means to imitate authentic products almost to perfection. "Not a week goes by without customers bringing in watches which they purchased in all good faith, and which turn out to be fakes," confirmed René Beyer, CEO of Beyer Chronometrie, a family-run business in Zurich. "Some are so well-imitated that only the manufacturer of the original can spot they are fake. Given that counterfeiters now make three "Rolex," to name a brand, out of one, how can we possibly distinguish between genuine and fake. We need to face the facts: we won't put a stop to counterfeit production."

Taking vertical integration beyond the production stage to also encompass distribution can be one response to this scourge. Technology is without doubt another. As Carlos Moreira explained, by giving each product a digital ID in the form of a smartcard with its own algorithmic code, problems of authentication are resolved as the card can be read at any point of sale and online. "Hublot has adopted this technology and gone on to launch its own social network, Hublotista, which has grown into a genuine community."

A battle on all fronts

None of these solutions, however, will dissuade customers who wittingly buy fakes. Brands have therefore multiplied initiatives at ground level, often successfully. "In 2002, we tackled the intermediaries of this underground economy who had most to lose from legal action against them, particularly in the US," Nathalie Moullé-Berteaux explained. "The courts ruled in our favour and we were able to continue talks with local authorities to conclude partnerships that are now giving results even in China. Legal pressure also recently led to a partnership with internet players such as eBay and Amazon. The only way to fight counterfeiting is to lead a battle on all fronts!" ■

Gianni Versace's virtuous circle

When Gian Giacomo Ferraris took over the reins at Gianni Versace in 2009, counterfeiting wasn't top of his agenda as the Italian fashion firm was in severe difficulty, forcing the new CEO to cut a quarter of its workforce. However, despite having his sights trained on a return to growth and profitability, Gian Giacomo Ferraris also had his eye on the counterfeit industry which in his words, speaking in June this year at the FT Business of Luxury Summit in Lausanne, "corrupts a brand, undermines its value creation, and can potentially destroy its business model." His first response was to individually target known counterfeiters and their distributors, but "it soon became obvious this was costing far too much time and money, with mixed results."

This prompted a change in strategy, now focused on prevention. Says Gian Giacomo Ferraris: "We started training staff in our own sales network and at our authorised distributors to make these points of sale centres of reference with regard to counterfeit goods. We also organised seminars with various Customs departments, worked on a national level with interest groups in our branch, and asked Italian embassies in the hardest-hit markets for their assistance. This set off a virtuous circle. Just one example: 360,000 counterfeit Versace products were seized in 2010, which is ten times more than in 2008 at a third of the cost."

The company has made the internet its priority for 2011. Gian Giacomo Ferraris has set up a specialised unit, tasked with closing down counterfeit sites and eliminating them from search engines. "The next step will be to raise awareness among consumers and show them there can be no compromising on quality." (CR)

Изначально, предлагая услуги Hublot, Морейра хотел всего лишь защитить покупателей этих дорогих часов от контрафакта. Дело в том, что Hublot использует хорошо узнаваемый корпус из драгоценных или композитных материалов, но широко распространенные часовые механизмы, и эти часы сравнительно легко подделать. Ее создатель — специалист по компьютерной безопасности Карлос Морейра одним из первых понял, что интернет эволюционирует от сообщества компьютеров к сообществу людей в сети, и теперь надеется заработать на этом, обеспечивая безопасность пользовательских данных и связывая пользователей, рекламодателей и производителей. Широкая общественность узнала о WISeKey несколько лет назад, когда логотип этой швейцарской компании появился на парусе швейцарской же яхты Alinghi — двукратного победителя старейшего спортивного соревнования на планете, Кубка Америки. Затем последовал контракт с культовой часовой маркой Hublot — и результаты этого сотрудничества поразили самого Морейру. Сейчас Морейра и его сотрудники активно работают с медийными и телекоммуникационными компаниями, доказывая им, насколько это перспективно: создавать подробные профили своих пользователей, но не продавать их, а совместно зарабатывать на рекламе. -Как появилась компания WISeKey?
— Я создал WISeKey в 1999 г. До этого я работал в женевском офисе ООН, занимался компьютерной безопасностью. Уже тогда мы поняли, что однажды интернет станет transactional, что сейчас и произошло, — и тогда вопросы безопасности передаваемой информации приобретут очень большое значение. Потому что изначально интернет создавался без учета необходимости защиты информации: его придумали ученые — физики, математики — для передачи данных, потребность в защите этих данных они не рассматривали.
Я создал WISeKey совместно с компанией, которая называлась Swiss Key и обеспечивала компьютерную безопасность швейцарских банков — шифровала данные, внедряла электронную подпись и прочее. Swiss Key занималась интернет-безопасностью в масштабах Швейцарии, мы же сразу себе поставили глобальную задачу, потому и назвались World Internet Security (WIS). Первые два года Swiss Key оставалась нашим акционером.
В 2000 г. мы заключили большую сделку с Международным союзом электросвязи (ITU), который определяет все стандарты, в которых работают различные отрасли связи. Потому что крупнейшие страны — Россия, Китай, США — имеют собственные стандарты шифрования. И они хотят контролировать развитие интернета, так же как они контролируют развитие других ключевых инфраструктурных проектов — путей сообщения, электросетей, водоснабжения… Нашей целью было разработать механизм защиты данных, который бы учитывал стандарты и требования, предъявляемые к интернет-безопасности в каждой конкретной стране.
За последние пять лет интернет эволюционировал от сообщества компьютеров к сообществу людей, соответственно, и интернет-безопасность сместилась от харда к софту, от машин к программному обеспечению. У пользователя появилась потребность в защите его личных данных, размещенных в интернете. Наше программное обеспечение за десятилетие было скачано на миллиарды устройств.
Многие компании выросли очень быстро и стали очень большими — Cisco, Microsoft, потому что ставили на компьютеры программное обеспечение в ту эпоху, когда центром вселенной были еще компьютеры. Но теперь центр смещается к человеку, и пока не так много компаний работают над тем, чтобы заработать на человеке [в интернете]. Facebook — это кейс для всех, это успешная история, которая стала таковой, потому что фокус был сделан на человека. Профили, размещенные в социальных сетях, создают огромную индустрию, иWISeKey позиционирует себя именно в этой индустрии.
— И как вы собираетесь зарабатывать на этом?
— Профили, или ID, как мы их называем, могут быть «брендированы» — сгруппированы в зависимости от человеческих интересов: например, любителей гольфа или кино. Фанаты Alinghi — а в Швейцарии 2 млн фанатов Alinghi — отличный пример такого брендирования. И теперь мы репродуцируем эту модель на другие сегменты человеческих интересов — Олимпийские игры, футбол, люксовые бренды.
С люксовыми брендами появляется еще один слой. Потому что интернет людей становится интернетом вещей, которыми эти люди обладают. Люди хотят поделиться на своей «стене» (wall), что у них есть такой-то дом, такие-то машины, такие-то часы…
Изначально мы начали работать с люксовыми марками, чтобы помочь им защититься от подделок. Ведь 7% продаваемых в мире люксовых вещей — подделки, а это $1,5 трлн в глобальной торговле ежегодно, и эта цифра растет год от года. Бренды поняли, что для того, чтобы им быть конкурентоспособными, чтобы иметь хороший имидж, они должны обеспечить своим клиентам надежную защиту от подделок. Чтобы покупатель, например, часов Hublot был уверен, что он покупает настоящие Hublot.
Мы разработали криптографическую систему, которая размещена на чипе, и при помощи цифрового устройства вы можете подтвердить, что эти Hublot — оригинальные. Более того, владельцы Hublot получают доступ в собственную закрытую и защищенную сеть наподобие Facebook (чтобы получить доступ в эту сеть, надо обязательно быть владельцем Hublot). Они получают возможность общаться друг с другом, а марка — предлагать им участие в различных мероприятиях.
— Понятно, как монетизировать профили в закрытых сообществах. Но как монетизировать открытые сообщества людей в интернете?
— Качество профилей такое высокое благодаря подробнейшей информации, которую люди размещают о себе на Facebook. У Facebook есть специальная аналитическая служба, которая мониторит эти профили и составляет из них базы данных. Facebook продает эти базы данных рекламодателям по $1-2 за профиль (в Facebook сейчас около 600 млн профилей, ее годовой оборот — $1,2 млрд). А вся Facebook оценивается в $50 млрд, т. е. рекламный потенциал одного пользователя — $100, или в 50 раз выше, чем его сейчас продает Facebook. Facebook говорит рекламодателям, что этот потенциал настолько велик потому, что ее базы данных намного подробнее и качественнее, чем у Google.
Но Google не только показывает ваши фотографии, она еще и изучает ваши привычки и интересы. У программы Google есть алгоритм, и каждый раз, когда вы заходите с поиском в Google, программа узнает о вас что-то новое. А если вы еще заходите в Google со своего e-mail и этот e-mail есть в вашем мобильном телефоне, то Google еще и определяет ваше местоположение. Все это повышает качество вашего профиля. А чем выше это качество, тем больше денег получает Google. Но вам от этого ничего не достается.
Наша идея — создавать высококачественные профили, но защищенные.
— Я не совсем понимаю: ваша система может работать с существующими социальными сетями или вы создаете свою социальную сеть?
— Наша система WISeID — это приложение. Вы бесплатно скачиваете его, устанавливаете, после чего можете пользоваться любыми программами и сетями в интернете, в том числе Facebook.
Сегодня мы также ведем переговоры с медийными компаниями. Компании, которые тратят миллиарды на создание новостей, теперь благодаря WISeKey могут возвращать деньги через свой бренд. Раньше бренд не приносил им денег. Для Financial Times мы сделали приложение, которое позволяет читателям получать доступ к полному пакету новостей по зашифрованному каналу, который субсидируется рекламодателями, а рекламодатели получают доступ к профилям читателей.
— У WISeID есть версии на английском, китайском, французском, немецком, испанском и даже вьетнамском языках. Когда появится на русском?
— В октябре этого года.
— Один из последних контрактов WISeKey — с футбольным клубом Real Madrid, действующий на территории Китая. Какая там бизнес-модель?
— В случае с [Real Madrid] болельщики [в Китае] скачивают приложение WISeKey, которое позволяет им смотреть матчи команды, подборку голов и т. п., и одновременно заполняют свой профиль. Эти сведения защищены. Рекламодатель платит за такие профили те же самые деньги, что и в Facebook, — $1-3 за пользователя. Но в отличие от Facebook здесь деньги рекламодателя распределяются между тремя сторонами: футбольным клубом, WISeKey и самим пользователем. Эти деньги аккумулируются в вашем виртуальном кошельке, и вы можете потратить их на покупку приложений, музыки и т. д.
У Lady Gaga в Facebook 50 млн фанов. Она не получает от этого ни цента. C WISeID Lady Gaga [могла бы получать] по $1 с каждого фана. В этом бизнес-идея. Поэтому сейчас мы плотно работаем со звездами, со спортивными клубами, с модными марками, объясняя им, как создать экосистему со своими поклонниками.
— Какой бизнес для вас перспективнее — традиционный по защите информации для банков и правительственных структур или связанный с социальными сетями? Какова пропорция в ваших доходах?
— Классический бизнес по защите информации мы называем ID1 — сюда входят национальные удостоверения личности, кредитные карты и прочее. Это то, с чего мы и все другие компании начинали, где заработали первые деньги. Затем WISeKey перешла к этапу ID2, задумавшись, а что можно делать, например, с национальным удостоверением личности, кроме как участвовать в электронном голосовании? Разные уровни безопасности позволяют использовать его в самых различных случаях, вплоть до доступа в различные учреждения.
Сейчас мы на этапе ID3, который несет рекламные доходы. C помощью нашего ID вы сможете, например, получать скидки в определенном ресторане поблизости, поскольку система идентифицирует вас и определяет, где вы находитесь.
В прошлом году ID1 обеспечил нам около 50% доходов, ID2 — около 40% и ID3 — около 10%. Мы полагаем, что в этом году ID3 будет давать нам около половины доходов. А в 2014 г. — уже 80%. Эффективнее отдавать профили бесплатно и зарабатывать на рекламе, чем продавать профили. Продавать — это старый, давно существующий рынок. А раздавать — это рынок новый.
У нас другой подход по сравнению с Facebook. Их подход — сначала создать большую базу данных, а затем решать проблемы безопасности. У нас — сначала решение проблем безопасности, затем создание базы данных. Facebook скоро придется столкнуться с очень серьезными проблемами, решения которых у них нет. У нас таких проблем нет. Мы не храним ваши базы данных — они хранятся на ваших мобильных телефонах или компьютерах. В Швейцарии компании не вправе торговать Personal Identifiable Information (PII). В Америке — вправе. Поэтому если однажды Facebook запретят продавать PII, она тут же превратится в компанию с оборотом в $10 млн.
У пользователей должно быть право удалить свой профиль. Попробуйте сегодня удалить свой профиль с Facebook — у вас это займет полгода: вам придется удалять поштучно фотографию за фотографией.
Facebook сегодня пятое по величине государство в мире, оно насчитывает более 750 млн человек. И Facebook знает о своих гражданах больше, чем реальные государства знают о своих. Это вызывает опасения у некоторых правительств (в Китае, например, Facebook нет). Они говорят: ОК, пусть социальные сети будут, — но выступают против того, чтобы кто-то один аккумулировал все данные. И это очень близко той идее, с которой я создавал WISeKey: каждое государство должно контролировать свои базы данных. Я предсказывал, что рано или поздно кто-то попытается аккумулировать все базы в одном месте, и теперь это так и происходит. Надо это децентрализовать. Но это не только политический, но и коммерческий вопрос. Потому что рекламодатели тоже начинают понимать, что им надо воздействовать на целевую аудиторию, а не каннибализировать свой бренд.
— В декабре прошлого года, представляя нового гендиректора WISeKey Филиппа Колло, вы заявили, что оборот вашей компании в 2010 г. вырос на 300%. Это не слишком быстро, вы можете управлять таким ростом?
— В этом году будет еще больше. Мы можем управлять, потому что, если завтра я подпишу контракт на 300 млн ID, моя существующая инфраструктура способна его реализовать, мне понадобится нанять, может быть, лишь еще несколько человек. И мне не нужна штаб-квартира в 5000 человек в Швейцарии — я хочу, чтобы компания была децентрализована.
Чтобы поддерживать рост, мы выбрали путь партнерства с высокопрофессиональными компаниями, такими как «Ай-теко» — это один из крупнейших российских интеграторов. Тот же принцип сотрудничества, что и в России, мы применяем в Бразилии, Китае, Индии — у нас очень сильные местные партнеры, у которых сотни сотрудников, знакомых с технологиями WISeKey, так что мы способны расти очень быстро, используя локальных партнеров.
— Но если в разных странах разные стандарты по электронной безопасности, что им может предложить WISeKey?
— Мы работам в стандарте X.509, который является международным. И в этом прелесть ITU, который разрабатывает очень децентрализованные стандарты. Верхний уровень — это защита, под ним — законодательный уровень национальных стандартов. Мы просто адаптируем свой продукт под национальные стандарты. Единственное ограничение — то, что мы должны присутствовать в стране, для которой разрабатываем продукты, именно поэтому мы создали СП в России, в Китае…
— Чем вам интересен российский рынок?
— Например, РЖД хочет создать систему электронных ID. Это проект на сотню миллионов долларов. Это не только электронные удостоверения — требуются еще биометрические ридеры и т. д. В России очень много интересных проектов — Олимпийские игры, чемпионат мира по футболу… Мы уже работаем для Олимпиады в Рио и для чемпионата мира в Бразилии, и нам было бы очень интересно перенести этот опыт в Россию. В Рио будет осуществлено очень много инноваций, связанных с удостоверениями личности, основанными на технологиях WISeKey.
— Сколько у вас сейчас людей в WISeKey?
— В Швейцарии 30 человек и еще около 100 по всему миру: 30 разработчиков в Индии, 20 — во Вьетнаме плюс в Болгарии, в Бразилии, в России… К моменту IPO, которое мы планируем на 2012 г., у нас будет 500 человек. Мы также думаем и о поглощениях — в некоторых странах покупать выгоднее, чем создавать СП.
— А для мобильных операторов ваши решения по защите информации подходят?
— Мы предлагаем те же решения и для Android, Blackberry.
Решение WISeID может быть импортировано непосредственно на sim-карту. Даже если оператор не желает работать с нами, пользователь может сам импортировать нашу программу на свою sim-карту. Но первое решение для операторов гораздо выгоднее, поскольку в этом случае мы делим с ними свой доход от абонента (ARPU), а во втором случае они ничего не получают.
— Менеджеры телекоммуникационных компаний готовы воспринимать ваши аргументы?
— Готовы, потому что им нужны новые источники доходов. Через пять лет мобильные звонки будут бесплатными, и они это понимают. Но сейчас они уверены, что смогут сделать все самостоятельно — свой ID, свой PKI… Однако пользователю не нужен локальный ID швейцарского или российского мобильного оператора — ему нужен один глобальный ID, с которым он сможет совершать все операции. Мы это проходили с банками, которые сначала тоже говорили нам, что создадут собственные решения, но потом убедились, что наши лучше и эффективнее. Я думаю, что прорыв в наших отношениях с операторами наступит в 2012 г. Сейчас мы говорим со всеми. Это так же, как в мире люкса: стоит только подписать один договор, как другие поймут, что тоже не могут без этого жить.
— Говорите со всеми, но не с российскими операторами?
— В России сложнее, поскольку сначала нужно решить вопрос с российским шифрованием. Как только мы его решим, мы будем способны двигаться очень быстро — у меня нет никаких сомнений.
— Ваша компания была спонсором Alinghi. Что вам это дало?
— Сотрудничество с Alinghi дало нам глобальную узнаваемость: на протяжении пяти дней наш бренд не сходил с экранов CNN, CNBC и других телеканалов. После я видел исследование [другого спонсора Alinghi] Hublot: чтобы Hublot или WISeKey обеспечить такое же присутствие на CNN и других телеканалах, потребовалось бы заплатить $350 млн.
— А вы заплатили за спонсорство, как я понимаю, цифру на пару нолей меньше?
— (Смеется.) Да, на пару нолей. Но это был для нас и хороший бизнес-кейс, поскольку мы также поставляли для Alinghi все решения по безопасности: пропускную систему, доступ в «сообщество друзей Alinghi». И этот опыт дал мне уверенность в работе в области спорта: если я сделал это раз, и сделал это хорошо, то смогу это сделать еще. И, конечно, это очень сильно повысило узнаваемость нашего бренда в интернете: когда мы объявили про союз WISeKey и Alinghi, эта новость появилась на 1,5 млн сайтов: люди сочли, что это очень круто, когда технологическая компания поддерживает яхтенную команду.

New York, September 20, 2011 – WISeKey pledged to provide identity management and the necessary transaction platform to enable a new approach of remittances and micro-credit initiatives. WISeKey Founder and CEO Carlos Moreira is in New York this week at the CGI Annual Meeting reporting to President Bill Clinton on the progress made on this project over the last five years.

WISeKey is announcing the release of the WISeID CGI Commitment Special Edition, with integrated ID federation, which allows individuals to automatically generate their WISeID (or secure digital identity) from a social network profile. The WISeID system was designed as a set of online tools intended to empower people with secure and private digital identification, trusted so as to enable transactional application.

WISeKey, together with the OISTE Foundation, has committed “to reduce the gap between the new Digital Identification Divide in less developed countries and emerging economies by creating the infrastructure that will make a de-facto global digital identity community of 1 billion digital identity users while providing equitable and meaningful access to digital information technology,” including trusted services on the cloud.

The design of WISeID is in accordance with the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which urges development of a high-level framework, and eventually, an interoperable "environment" for identification, authentication, and authorization during the course of online transactions. The White House has termed this environment the Identity Ecosystem. Today, everything and everybody is online. There simply isn’t anything you cannot find on the Web – or if there is, I’m not aware of what it is. The “Web revolution” has changed the world and our lives. There are millions – if not billions – of people who are constantly “connected”, because that is the way they live their lives nowadays. For businesses, it could be said that, “If you ain’t on the Web, you don’t exist” (and excuse the use of the informal, but that is exactly the way it is).

All of this, of course, has its good and bad sides. As with most things, everything has its price. And in the case of the Internet and the enormity of the life-changing opportunities, information and inexhaustible possibilities the Web has given birth to, that price is the potential for insecurity, loss of confidentiality and possible usurping of your identity and even, in some cases, your hard-earned money.

I cite a short personal experience to illustrate how easily things can go wrong. I once booked a hotel room on the hotel’s website (I won’t mention the country but it was not Switzerland!). I immediately received an e-mail from the hotel confirming my reservation. The next day, I received two different e-mails that said, “Thank you for your reservation. Your credit card has been charged.” (from “address unknown”, so you could not reply). I thought, “Oh, oh, somebody’s got my credit card details and is going to ring up untold amounts on my card.” I went back to the hotel’s reservation website and discovered that it was not an “https” site; in my haste in making the reservation, I had failed to check this and I had consequently input my card details on an unsecured site! Over the next few days I continually checked my card account online (secured site) to see if any unauthorized charges had been made. None were – and I thought, “OK, some young hacker is only playing a game and I’m alright.” Then, about a month later, a charge appeared for approximately $35 that I had not made and the indicated charge details were only an 0800 telephone number in the US. I phoned and was informed that the company I was calling was only a payment service provider for online purchases and they were unable to tell me who made the charge (they also refused to give me their own company name or location). They did say, however, that they would cancel the charge and refund it to me (which they subsequently did). Suspicions aroused, I immediately cancelled the card; Googled the 0800 telephone number and discovered that literally thousands of persons had likewise been charged the same amount over the last few years. I tracked the company down, phoned the local sheriff’s office where they were located and informed them that a company in their jurisdiction (I now had their name, address, managing director’s name, etc) was fraudulently charging other people’s credit cards. (What happened to the company after that, I don’t know because I was no longer concerned about the matter – I had a new card, my original hotel reservation was OK and, most importantly, I had learned a lesson about using my card on the Web, fortunately with no great cost to me.)

Imagine, however, if the same scenario had happened to a company transmitting important – and highly confidential – financial details, bank details, valuable information or anything else of a highly sensitive nature, the unauthorized disclosure of which could seriously damage the company, if not totally destroy it. I can assure you such things have happened, and probably do happen, every single day somewhere in the world. There is an answer to the problem and taking up the choice could be the wisest decision you’ll ever make.

Data protection agencies are demanding proof that measures to protect online consumer data have been put in place. Meanwhile, sharply different attitudes towards privacy are tearing the map apart. “Suddenly social networks and other businesses are compiling data on a daily basis (whether we want it or not) and they are totally unregulated,” points out Carlos Moreira, CEO and founder of WISeKey, a leading Swiss eSecurity company. “There are no international standards and no international organization is taking decisions to handle and regulate these issues, so we have an environment which is open to all kinds of abuse.”

In the past year, run-ins between regulators and the Big Four – Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Facebook – on the use of private data have become increasingly frequent. Privacy has become an unequivocally controversial issue. More importantly, while data flows around the globe, privacy laws and rules have become a matter of geopolitics.

Despite such differences, the current situation in Europe is that regulations are inspired by the conviction that data privacy is a fundamental human right and that individuals should be in control of how their personal data is used and by whom.

Antiquated or non-existent legislation

The flagship Data Protection Directive came into effect in 1995, before firms such as Google , Facebook and Twitter were even created. However, in America the US Federal Trade Commission has only recently published a “Do Not Track” proposal as part of a framework to protect against the commercial use of consumer data.
A privacy and security researcher cited in the International Herald Tribune in December, said that the majority of consumers do not have privacy software and that the use of privacy options in most Internet browsers does not make much of a difference. This is due to the fact that web browsers are partly supported by advertising networks.

When companies such as WISeKey started trying to sell the CertifyID Personal eID integrated within Microsoft Office, the market response at the time wasn’t what one would expect. Aside from digitally permitting the user to sign and encrypt Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and Outlook e-mails, CertifyID also secures e-mails and documents using strong encryption. It aims to protect users from identity theft and data leaks and has WebTrust accreditation and uses a globally trusted personal X509 digital certificate.

The commercialization of this product coincided with a tougher Internet regulation on consumer data in the United States last May. However, at the time, the US media regulator agreed that the government would show restraint under a new plan to regulate providers of high-speed Internet. This happened in response to the panic that hit investors on Wall Street at the prospect of tougher regulation.

David and Goliath

“One of the topics of the WEF Meeting in Davos this year will be focused on rethinking the personal data initiative in a ‘think global, act local’ manner”, explains Carlos Moreira. Currently there are no international standards for personal data and consumer data protection and the Geneva-based founder of WISeKey does not believe there will be.

“Although the Internet is global, regulation is not applicable worldwide. It is now up to the various governments to protect their Internet users. Last month the European Union launched a new directive stating that there is a need for a delete button on the content we add to the Internet. Meaning that if you have been using social networks for months or years and your status changes, then maybe the data that you have compiled is no longer accurate and you may want to opt out of the social networking site. In this case you will need a delete button for your personal data. Currently, if you opt out of a social networking site the data on the site remains the property of the social networking organization.”

This protection is currently available in other industries but it is not yet available in social networking. The philosophy of rethinking personal data is not a technology issue because the technology already exists; the problem is that the data does not belong to the individual concerned. When you transfer data to Facebook or Twitter or indeed any other social network, you are giving your data away for free. But if you give something away for free, how can you recover it later? “There is no method of recovery,” says Moreira. “Once you give something away for free it is no longer yours – it belongs to the organization that you gave it to.”

The rethink of personal data has to move forward together, maintaining equilibrium between technology, legislation, standards and geopolitical focus, which means that each country will have a different way to organize their data. China’s approach is different to that of Europe’s which is again different to the American’s, which means that there is not one solution to suit everyone. “Actually, if we don’t find an international mediation for this then the Internet will be divided into different internets which will no longer be compatible. The Internet started as a network of computers, now it has become something totally different, a network of people. Facebook is now the 4th largest “virtual country on earth” and has more personal data on their “Friends” that any government on earth has on their citizens. If this is not regulated you will have Russia, China, Brazil, Europe and America each having their own Internet to protect their “citizen data”. This is already happening with Facebook being banned in China. We will find ourselves going back to the ’80s when we had an Intranet with big walls to block people’s access and we will destroy the original spirit of openness on the Net and WWW,” comments Carlos Moreira.

The right to disappear

While the Directive’s core principles issued in 1995 remain valid, modern technology and globalization pose new challenges to data protection. These changes have led to questions on whether the existing EU data protection legislation can still fully and effectively be relied on or whether reform is needed. For instance, how do we know what happens to our personal data when we book and board a plane, open a bank account, make a payment, make an IP call or share photos online? How is this data used and by whom? How do we permanently delete the PII (Personal Identifiable Information) on social networking websites? Can we even transfer our contacts and photos to another service?

To address these issues, the EU Commission held public consultations in 2009 and stakeholder consultations throughout 2010. In 2011, the Commission will propose a new general legal framework for the protection of personal data in the EU, covering data processing operations in all sectors and policies of the EU. The European Parliament and the Council of Ministers will then negotiate and is expected to adopt the Commission’s proposal.

“We believe that PII needs to be strongly protected as this is the most sensitive information and allows the person to be tracked. The only way to do this is by encrypting your PII and defining standards that clearly give the ownership of the PII to the user and not to the service provider. If this is done, then the PII is associated with your Digital Identity which can then protect the personal data, as it belongs to you,” says Moreira. “If your data is associated with your PII, and if your identity is encrypted, the data can be activated or deactivated the moment your identity wishes and without any need for a decision from anybody else.” So if you put your pictures on Facebook and those pictures are linked to your digital identity, which is outside Facebook, the moment you change the privileges associated with your digital identity, those pictures will be deleted.

WISeKey has also developed a technology called WISeID, which has the ability to protect and control users’ documents or media that are posted on the web. These objects are associated with a remote server validation system so that whenever an object is accessed from the web, validations are carried out (revocation, status, validity check…) and a key accessed to decrypt and view the object (via a plug-in). The WISeID user has total control over the lifecycle of the objects and can at anytime revoke access to them through WISeID. By doing so, these objects posted on the web will no longer be readable by anyone.

WISeID runs on mobile phones, iPads and many other devices and allows you to put all your confidential data into an app format. You can put your Facebook/social network description, your credit card accounts, and your bank account details into this format – all in an encrypted environment – and the application allows you to keep control of your data yourself, and is encrypted with your own identification. You can then put content wherever you want – the application will allow you to go to Facebook or anywhere else and activate your profile there – but the day that you want to deactivate that profile you can deactivate it. This is referred to in the new EU Directive as “the right to disappear”.

Embedded in legislation

“This creates an environment that allows a person to regain control over their personal data,” says Moreira. WISeKey technology is based on International Standards such as those applied by all UN member countries and regulated by International Organizations based in Geneva – it offers, in essence, a de facto legislation which is endorsed by all the countries of the world and can be used as the means of regulating and mediating personal data standards and changes.

We already have International Organizations and treaties on how we can exchange goods. We have organizations, such as the World Trade Organization, which put into place controls over physical goods. But today we have goods (data) which are non-physical goods. We live in an environment where non physical goods, especially data, are becoming as important as physical goods, even more so, and we don’t have any international treaties to protect people from abuse of these non physical goods. We have reached a point where one can imagine a situation in which someone will be storing all the data of the world in one warehouse in one specific country – an obviously unacceptable scenario which is happening now.

“I think there is something which needs to be embedded into legislation,” says Moreira, “something which means that companies of the future do not compromise their customers’ personal data and if they do they are punished by the customers. In the same way as in the car industry, where security has to be there to guarantee the value of the vehicle and the protection of its driver. The equivalent of security in cars has to be standard when dealing with security and protection of data.”

Moreira believes that the drivers of change will be both technology and next-generation companies such as WISeKey. Companies who not only care about the technology business but are more responsible in providing technology and services to customers by showing them how to access the Internet, share their media and have exchanges with friends without compromising their personal data, so that people can use social networking sites in the confidence that their data is secure and will not be abused.

Acting with a little more foresight

Technology is about being increasingly responsible in the way we access data. Companies such as Google or Facebook do not have this concern in their DNA as they were not thinking about it when they were created, but sooner or later they are all going to have to comply with international standards. Approaches like “Let’s solve that problem later. Let’s first create a critical mass and worry about personal data issues later” won’t work anymore. The danger of doing that (after collecting such a huge amount of data) is that by the time you try to solve the problem, you have a structure that makes it impossible, as other forces get involved. You need to embed personal data protection into the DNA of your company from inception.

“Today we are officially in the Web 3.0 era and everyone is trying to act with a little more foresight”, Moreira adds, “and I expect that this next generation of companies will be companies which will, from day one, start thinking of how to protect confidentiality issues.”

In fact what is being planned is a situation where we handle our personal data on the Internet in the same way as we do in private life or we do with our financials– showing our personal data only to the people that we trust. Imagine, for instance, that you meet some people at a cocktail party, you may exchange cards with everyone but you give your mobile phone number to only a few and your home address to even fewer. That is the basis of WISeID: you can disclose whatever you want to the people you trust and you disclose less to others depending on the level of trust – creating the same interaction as we have in everyday life.

As Carlos Moreira emphatically puts it, “The concept of WISeID is that a person has the human right to be anonymous, and technology designers must take this right into consideration.”

However, the most interesting and alarming presentation was given by Carlos Moreira, a world class visionary, entrepreneur, founder and chairman of WISeKey.

“The Internet,” Moreira said, “is a 20-year-old infrastructure that was not designed to carry the load, security issues or usage of the system today. In the coming years it is imperative that we promote a new system that provides security for users around the world.”

He asserted that online security has become a big issue. There is so much personal information out there in cyberspace and protecting that information is the biggest challenge. He explained that Wikileaks was just one thing that was widely mentioned in the media. Government transactions, national ID cards and financial services are all built on an infrastructure that is simply not trustworthy. The World Wide Web is not safe, he said. Why? Because, it is very easy for any unsophisticated hacker to get into any infrastructure by buying software online for just $300. He wondered what will happen in the next 10 years? “We are not only adding more people to the Internet — Facebook is a great example of that — we are also adding new devices. There will be 50 billion devices that will be interconnecting through the Internet.”

Moreira felt everybody should be concerned about privacy. Over seven billion people are going to have mobile phones in the years to come. “Those seven billion people will be added to the current infrastructure and that is going to increase the complexity of the problem we are facing now.” So what is the solution? “It is simple,” he said. “We should treat the Internet the same way as we treat a product. We have international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) that handle dispute resolution of products and services. We don't have an international organization that is an equivalent of the WTO and does the same thing with data — the most important, ubiquitous product of the 21st century.” Well, Internet should not be treated as a technology playground. What Moreira revealed was quite scary.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) Gov. Muhammad Al-Jasser said on Monday that inflation and food stability are the two major challenges that the world is currently facing.

The governor made these remarks while opening a panel discussion on global risks at the 5th Global Competitiveness Forum that is currently being held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Riyadh.

“As countries’ populations grow, food production and stability become increasingly important to avoid inflation through rising food costs and a reduction in purchasing power,” Al-Jasser said, adding that India and China form a third of the world’s population.

He recalled that the price of onions in India has quadrupled during recent weeks and stressed that food security promotes political stability. “Efforts to improve food efficiency, especially in distribution, can yield immediate results. For example, in India one third of perishable goods expire before reaching market. Creating innovative supply solutions to overcome this challenge is one way to improve food security,” he said.

He noted that the world needs to heed lessons learned from the crisis or the lessons will be learned in vain. There needs to be global rebalancing, and the US needs to promote saving while China needs to promote consumption. A multi-pronged currency in the world is an important backbone for this solution.

Al-Jasser pointed out that the Kingdom successfully overcame the recent financial crisis due to prudent economic planning although it was conservative by nature. “When we implemented them (the economic measures), we did not escape criticism, but now we are getting commendations from both the local and the international community for our success in emerging from the crisis,” he said.

Explaining the reasons for the success from the financial crisis, the governor said that the Kingdom fully understood the economic slowdown and managed the financial sector well.

“There were two attributes to our approach toward the problem — managerial prudence and regulatory and supervisory prudence. The two cannot substitute each other but they are complementary to each other … We stuck to the basics,” said Al-Jasser. “Recovery from the world financial crisis is promising and optimistic, and it can be fragile, sluggish and uneven,” he added.

Besides Al-Jasser, the other members of the panel included Tony Blair, former prime minister of the UK; Jean Chretien, former prime minister of Canada; Caroline Daniels, chairman and CEO of Aircraft Technical Publishers; Carlos Moreira, founder and chairman of WISeKey; and James Turley, chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young.

Blair said the single biggest challenge for everyone today is the pace of change. “Because of advances in technology and communication, messages are transmitted quickly across the world — with big consequences — and everyone has to adapt and adjust in order to advance,” he said.

“It is critical that we manage these changes in a spirit of cooperation, not competition … the world faces four distinct challenges in the coming years. There are challenges that we are capable of meeting, in fact meeting some of them is an exciting opportunity, but we cannot shy away,” he added.

Dwelling on the need to address the challenge of collaboration, the former prime minister said that while in recovery there is a tendency to do things independently and create solutions centered on solving only one’s own challenges. However, he added, it is imperative that the world continues to come together and collaborate through organizations like the G20.

“In the next few years, Europe needs to confront its fiscal challenges with diligence and prudence,” he said.

Regarding the challenge of security, he said there is an urgent need to continue to promote peace among different cultures, especially in the region where a peace agreement is critical.

On the importance of avoiding crises like what we have just faced, Caroline Daniels said, “We need to reinforce a sense of trust and safety within the world through mutual cooperation.”

Carlos Moreira said the Internet is a 20-year-old infrastructure that was not designed to carry the load, security issues or usage of the system today. “In the coming years it is imperative that we promote a new system that provides security for users around the world.”

James Turley concluded saying there is a need to “empower entrepreneurs as they are the backbone of growth, ideas, and recovery. There are many challenges that they face and both the government and private sector can take action to improve the situation.”
